Navigating Digital Subscriptions - Skyship’s Journey with WunderBox

Paywall Super Simple app.

We have had the pleasure to work with the team at Skyship since early 2019 when they created the first iteration of their Super Simple app for very young kids. Over the years, we have supported them and watched them develop into new areas of content publishing including interactive books, games and extra support material for parents.

The app now hosts over 1,000 pieces of Super Simple IP  and goes from strength to strength on the app store in terms of subscriber numbers. Here at Wonderz, we are always keen to listen to our customers and where we think it appropriate, to work with them on new iterations of their business models. Skyship wanted to do more for their app with new ways for families to sign into their own accounts and make that part of the Super Simple experience for delivering content.

Here’s Brett Jubinville, Head of Distribution at Skyship, to tell us more about the project that just launched online last week:

Creating our own account management system was an important milestone for the Super Simple app. First, it lets our subscribers log in on whatever device they want, regardless of whether it’s Android or Apple. This is something that has quickly become the standard and is what people have come to expect. Second, it allows us to really ramp up our marketing efforts. We have a really large audience on YouTube and it’s been challenging to reach them and tell them about the app. Now we can use UA tools like coupon links and give them the opportunity to try the app for free and decide if they like it. Overall, it gives us the flexibility we need to transform what was a side business into our main business.

Daniel Matzke,  CTO of Wunderbox, had this to add:

As a company, we always champion “direct to consumer.”  It's one of the central pillars of our WunderBox service. In addition, where any client wants to extend or bridge web membership services into the App world we are ready to go the extra mile to do this. For customers new in the field monetisation through App Store /Play Store is often the best approach. For those who want to go further and maintain their own client database, Skyship haas led the way on how to host your own membership database and work with us in interlinking the web and commerce service. In light of the Apple announcement last week, the access to a subscription platform via an app is even more enhanced In short: it makes the system more valuable because it can now be the primary subscription service. Before we were not allowed to offer registration through the app, so you had to leave the app and register on the website and come back again. That has started to change now and offers a good choice for developers to consider when building their own content libraries.
